Distance Supervision Available

Are you a music therapy student or professional looking for clinical supervision? I provide supervision via video over a platform that is both HIPAA compliant and GDPR compliant. I have several years of experience providing long distance supervision and therapy, and have worked with many individuals who reside all over the world.

I maintain my US board-certification in music therapy along with my New York State licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist and am currently in the application process to be registered as an Arts Therapist in the United Kingdom.

I have been working in the field of music therapy in New York City for the past 15 years, and have now returned to live and work in Scotland. For the past ten years, I have run a private psychotherapy practice working with adults and teenagers with histories of trauma and other mental health diagnoses. I am adjunct faculty at New York University’s music therapy program, and an assistant trainer with the Institute for Music and Consciousness in China and the USA, and the Integrative GIM Training Program in London. As a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery, I am one of the first people to be trained in The Continuum Model of GIM, developed by Dr. Lisa Summer.

My areas of expertise and special interest include:

  • Psychotherapy with adults
  • Music and Imagery methods
  • Trauma
  • Self-care and resilience

I have extensive experience supervising students and professionals working with children and adults in the medical field, geriatric care, school settings, and private practice. Please feel free to contact me here for more information.

Treating trauma with Guided Imagery and Music.

In 2015, I co-authored an article for the journal, Music and Medicine, a link to which can be found here: Treatment of Trauma Utilizing GIM. The editors describe the article:

This report is a generous synthesis of GIM and The Bonny Method, reflecting how music and imagery can impact work with trauma, PTSD, and how it can serve to enrich the lives of refugees. It is wonderful to see the legacy of Helen Bonny’s work, initiated in the 1970’s-alive and well today and carried forth in such a compelling way, where it is needed most. Trauma-Informed Guided Imagery and Music

On July 16, 1:30-3:00pm, Erin Montgomery and I will be presenting at the 23rd International Conference of the Association for Music and Imagery in Elizabeth, NJ. Our presentation will explore Judith Herman’s phase-oriented model of working with trauma as it relates to a developmental model of Guided Imagery and Music: Supportive GIM for Safety and Stabilization; Re-educative GIM for Trauma Processing; and Reconstructive GIM for Reintegration. We will share clinical examples from each phase of treatment.

My colleague, Erin Montgomery, MEd, MTA, RCT-C, FAMI, is a music therapist and counseling therapist living and working in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She completed her GIM training at the Institute for Music and Consciousness and studied trauma-informed therapeutic approaches through the Boston Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, the Cape Cod Institute and the Traumatology Institute in Toronto.

Website design

Welcome to my new website, officially launched today!

I want to thank my amazing designer, Rebecca Hume, who spent many hours developing a look that would reflect my personality and my clinical work. I really love what she’s created for me; it clearly expresses my intention as a therapist, and hopefully invites more people to experience music therapy.

Feel free to leave feedback here, or contact Rebecca at the link above if you like her work.

Heading to Vancouver!

I am excited to report that, this week, I am attending the 2013 conference of the Association for Music and Imagery in Vancouver, Canada. I will be co-presenting with Maya Story on the subject of GIM and beyond: How GIM training informs our other work. I’m excited to begin a deeper conversation about receptive methods in music therapy, and how training in deep listening is an essential skill for therapists and clients alike.

Check out the conference schedule to learn about what other presentations are on offer.
